360 Health

I've recently finished writing my first book titled 360 Health:  Your Guide to Cancer Prevention, Healing Foods, & Total Body Wellness.  I was inspired to write the book after working in a hospital and caring for many individuals who suffered from the effects of cancer.  Cancer also hit close to home this past year when, sadly, my mother-in-law passed away from the disease.

I've always been interested in nutrition and food's effects on the body.  On my quest to find the best "diet" and to learn about food sources that nourish and sustain us, I discovered the concept of "anti-angiogenic" foods.  These foods can literally stop cancer growth from occurring.  They inhibit blood vessel formation to tumors or potentially cancerous cells.  When eaten in conjunction with an overall anti-inflammatory diet, anti-angiogenic foods can heal us and prolong our lives.

A large part of health is nutrition.  However, other factors play in to our overall wellness. …

Comparing Krill and Fish Oils

Essential Fatty Acids Why do people take fish oil or krill oil? Because both contain Essential Fatty Acids (or EFAs). EFAs are long-chain polyunsaturated fats that are "essential" because our bodies do not manufacture them, and they must be obtained from outside sources. The two main EFAs are Omega 3s and Omega 6s. A healthy balance of EFAs is needed for healthy hormone production and thyroid function; for cell membranes; for brain function; for cardiovascular health (think cholesterol and triglycerides); for inflammation reduction; and for healthy skin and hair ... to name a few. The typical Western diet has an overabundance of Omega 6s. They are found in things like highly processed corn oil, soybean oil, sunflower oil, and nuts and seeds. These foods, especially the oils, are found in just about any packaged, convenience food. There is no lack of Omega 6s in most people's diets. The recommended ratio of Omega 6 to Omega 3 is 2:1. The American diet has more like a 10…

5 Easy Ways to Detoxify Your Body

In our society, we are inundated daily with toxins.  We are exposed to them through the air we breathe, through chemicals found in our cleaning and beauty products, through pesticides and GMOs in our foods, and even through contaminants that leach into our water system.  We simply cannot avoid them completely.

Our bodies crave a break from these pollutants.

We do have innate detoxification systems in place within our own bodies.  Our liver acts as the primary filter for toxins.  Our kidneys and colons also help to filter out toxins through urine and feces respectively.  Our lungs filter out toxins and debris from the air we breathe. Our skin is our largest organ, and it eliminates toxins through sweat.  The lymph system collects unwanted "debris" in the body such as fats, bacteria and other harmful materials and filters them through the lymph nodes.

Although we have these built-in systems, sometimes our bodies still need assistance to boost that process, especially if we…

Which Vitamins and Supplements Should I Take?

If you're like most consumers, you probably have a pantry full of vitamins and supplements.  Some have been there for years.  You may have even forgotten what they were reported to help.  Maybe you ordered them online after watching Dr. Oz, or maybe you read about them in a magazine and thought you should try them, too.

The reality is, supplements are a $37 billion industry which reels you in ... hook, line, and sinker.  Marketing gimmicks like "get ripped quick" or "drop those excess pounds" sound very enticing.  Other supplements are manufactured to help with different ailments or deficiencies.  If you simply google a condition "and supplements" (ex. "rheumatoid arthritis and supplements"),  you'll get millions of results.  You can find a "cure" for just about anything.

So which supplements do you really need to take?  Well, if you really have a medical condition, you may look into selective supplementation that compliments…
