My Favorite Things: December 2018

This month, it’s all about food and beverages. I don’t know about you, but in the winter I’m often craving warm treats, so I have a few of those to share with you. Happy Holidays!

1) Celestial Seasonings Sugar Cookie Sleigh Ride Herbal Tea

A sugar cookie in a mug! This tea is soothing and delicious. With a hint of sweetness, orange, and vanilla, it’s a perfect treat on a cold winter day. It’s also helpful in turning off those sugar cravings. Get yours soon because this is a seasonal tea. I got mine at Target, although after recommending it to some friends, the shelves were empty at our local store. The tea is also available on Amazon. One caveat I will give is that this does contain roasted barley, so if you are gluten-sensitive, you’ll need to drink with caution.

2) Collagen + Matcha Drink

Collagen is so healing for the gut and good for our joints, cartilage, hair, and nails. You can read more about its benefits here. Matcha is loaded with antioxidants and is detoxifying. It’s also reported to boost metabolism while providing a calming effect on the brain. This product combines the two in a delicious, healthy way. My podcast cohost and friend Laurie introduced me to this. She made me a warm mug of it with a little bit of honey, and it was such a nice alternative to coffee on a cold morning.

3) Gluten-Free Banana Pancakes Recipe

Speaking of warming up on a cold morning, my friend Rita from Healthy Beat Skinny has an amazing recipe for Gluten-free Banana Pancakes that is all about comfort food. Gluten-Free Banana Pancakes


2 over ripe bananas mashed
2 Cups Gluten free Baking flour (I use Bob’s Mill)
1/3 Cup coconut flour
2/3 Cup Blanched Almond flour
2 TBS Baking powder
2 eggs
1 3/4 C Whole Milk

Extras: add cinnamon for some added flavor or Mila chia to pack a nutritious punch. (if you aren’t familiar with Mila just ask, it’s awesome!)


Stir all ingrendients together with a fork add in 1 TBS apple cider vinegar and stir in.

One of the keys to making great pancakes is getting the eggs mixed in well but not over stirring. The batter should not be perfectly smooth. Batter that’s slightly lumpy makes the best pancakes! Scoop out onto buttered skillet, when ready (you’ll be the judge of that) flip. You know the rest!

4) Brandless


I was recently introduced to the website Brandless. Brandless is a place in which you can shop for non-name-brand food and cleaning supplies. I love it because there are some very clean alternatives … cleaning supplies without toxic chemicals, beauty and personal care products without harmful ingredients, and foods to choose from that are organic, gluten-free, and vegan. And the stuff on this site is dirt cheap … think $3 for a bag of almonds, $3 for a two-pack of coconut lip balm, or a “green” tub and tile cleaner also for $3. Amazing deals for some quality products!

5) “Salt Fat Acid Heat” on Netflix

The Netflix Original “Salt Fat Acid Heat” is unlike any other food show you’ve seen. Chef Samin Nosrat draws you in with gorgeous footage of her travels to Italy, Japan, Mexico and Berkeley, California. Through her travels, we learn about the origins of our food from professional dairy farmers and fishermen, and visits the homes of locals who teach us how to use those ingredients. This show fuses together elements of travel shows, cooking programs, and documentary films, making it a must-see mini-series. With only four episodes, it was both easy to watch and not enough — I wanted to see more! I’m looking forward to season 2.
